The UFSI team at K-State is pleased to offer up to $700 in travel awards to UFS educators to attend UFSS (with support from NCR-SARE), covering registration and other travel costs. Priority will be given to applicants from the North Central Region of the US, but applicants from other regions can also apply. Recipients will be determined by the described need and potential impact of attendance. Application review begins May 15th.
If you are an agricultural professional from Kansas who works directly to support growers, you are eligible to apply for a Kansas SARE Professional Development Travel Scholarship for up to $500 to help with costs of attending the 2026 Urban Food Systems Symposium. Scholarships are limited and awarded on a first come, first served basis.
If you are a beginning farmer (farming for less than 10 years), you are eligible to apply to the Kansas Specialty Crop Growers Association’s Beginning Grower Travel Stipend Program. The purpose of this program is to decrease travel barriers for beginning growers hoping to attend networking and training opportunities. To receive a travel stipend, you must be able to verify your participation at an event and describe what you gained by attending. Eligible recipients can receive up to $500.00 reimbursement for registration, mileage, and lodging. You do not need to be a Kansas-based farmer.
New Growth is offering a scholarship opportunity for beginning farmers and ranchers (less than ten years of farm or ranch operation experience) who have at least started their farm/ranch operation plan and are in the process of beginning their farm/ranch. Scholarships are offered in the range of $50 to $300 to assist in funding educational opportunities that will support success in beginning farming or ranching operations. Examples of approved educational opportunities include: paying for a farm or ranch-related online course, attending an in-person conference or workshop.
During the biennial Urban Food Systems Symposium, two student awards will be given:
1. One award for the best oral presentation given by a student who is at the same time the presenter and first author of the submitted abstract
2. One award for the best poster presented by a student who is the first author of the work
A special committee, set up by the chairs of the organizing committee and scientific committee, will be responsible for selecting the awardees. Students to be eligible for this award must be the lead and presenting author of the submission and should be enrolled in a university or college as an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate (limited to 6 months after finishing the program of study).
How to participate? To indicate your interest in the Student Award, check the appropriate choice during the submission of your abstract. By indicating your interest in the Student Award, you confirm that you meet the above-mentioned criteria for participation and agree to accept the terms and conditions.
Kansas State University Urban Food Systems Initiative Student Award winners will be recognized in the final symposium program book that is published as part of the online proceedings, including a photo of the award ceremony or the award winners and a brief outline of the winners. Awardees will be invited to write a summary of their research, to be considered for publication in the UFSS Proceedings. A certificate as well as a $250 honorarium will be awarded to each winner.
